Jerry knew as a youngster he wanted to be a performer. His paternal grandparents reported he would run around, strumming his guitar saying, “I’m gonna be a star. I’m gonna go to Nashville and be a star”.
He was just 18 when he was signed to a record contract, and he cut, “If the Good Lord’s Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise”.
Other artists started recording his material. and this continued throughout his career. Gene Vincent with, “Crazy Legs”, Brenda Lee’s, “That’s All You Got to Do”, Elvis Presley with, “Guitar Man”, Johnny Cash’s, “A Thing Called Love”.
In 1971, Jerry had his biggest hit with, “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot”, which earned Jerry the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. Jerry is one of only five people to have the title, “Certified Guitar Player”.
He appeared in more than a dozen movies, including all three of the “Smokey and the Bandit” films.
