Grammy Awards And Country Hits

He was just 10 when he performed on the radio for the first time.  He was captivated by music, and was a talented performer.  He dropped out of school at 16, and shortly after joined the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was known as ‘El Bebop Kid’, and released two songs in Spanish…Elvis’ ‘Don’t be Cruel’ and Harry Belafonte’s ‘Jamaica Farewell’.   In 1958 he changed his name to Freddy Fender.

In 1959 he recorded, ‘Wasted Days and Wasted Nights’, but it wasn’t until he remade that single 15 years later that the song became a top hit.  Fender won three Grammy Awards during the course of his career.

Join me next Saturday, June 22 at 9:20, for more with Freddy Fender!
