Ricky Gervais backs Canadian conservation officer who refused to kill bear cubs
Comedian Ricky Gervais is standing behind a Canadian conservation officer’s decision not to kill 2 black bear cubs.
Bryce Casavant was suspended after he refused to put down the two cubs who were found in a tree near their mother. The mother bear was captured and killed Sunday after she was found eating salmon out of a freezer in a home in British Columbia.
Casavant turned the cubs over to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association even though he had been told by his superiors to euthanize them. They then suspended him without pay.
The director of the shelter said, “After investigating, he decided there was no need to euthanize the cubs. They were never in the house or trailer, and the owner of the property told me that too.”
A petition for Casavant to be reinstated has garnered over 42,000 signatures in a day and support from Gervais, who tweeted to his nine million followers: “Reinstate this honourable man.”
The British Columbia environment minister said an internal investigation was under way.
