Eric Church Surprise Appearance
Eric Church made a suprise — and I mean surprise — appearance in his home state on Thursday, October 15th night where he was being inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. The singer was not expected to attend the induction at the Gem Theater in Kannapolis due to another commitment, so his mother and sister were sent in his place.
Eric was playing a private gig in North Carolina that night and happened to finish the event earlier than expected, so he borrowed his dad’s car and made the 90-minute drive to Kannapolis with his wife and his assistant. The three arrived just as Eric’s mother, Rita, took the stage to address the crowd and thank them for the honor on Eric’s behalf. The singer, his assistant and wife had hoped to find a back door to sneak in, but there wasn’t one. Instead, the trio spotted cords snaking into a second level balcony entrance, and without hesitation Eric’ assistant scaled the wall and made it through the backstage balcony barn doors. He grabbed a nearby ladder and threw it over the edge for Eric and his wife to climb up.
Rita Church was just concluding her remarks when Eric suddenly took the stage to screams and applause and offered his own thanks. He didn’t have a guitar with him, but he showed his gratitude by performing a song on a borrowed, beat up electric guitar. He told the crowd, “Well, let’s see what I can play in whatever key this is in . . .” before launching into “Carolina.”
Eric was in Raleigh, NC over the weekend to perform his last show of the year at the American Roots Music & Arts Festival.
