When he formed his first band, ‘The Blue Ridge Boys’, they performed on radio from a butcher shop, where he cut meat.

They performed anywhere they could, to get a cut of the gate receipts.

Things started to improve in 1953 when his song, ‘Trademark’, became a hit for Carl Smith.

He went on to have 81 charted records including, ‘A Satisfied Mind’, ‘Misery Loves Company’ and ‘Green Green Grass of Home’.

He is credited with discovering Dolly Parton, and they sang many duets together, and performed together on his TV show.
