He was raised by his dad, and helped with the family’s two thousand acre cattle ranch. During high school, he was part of a garage band, playing rock and roll, until Country music attracted his ear.
The sound of George Jones, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams became big influences, and there was always live performances to enjoy “in every town in Texas”, according to George.
He made his first appearance at the Houston Livestock Show when the headlining star, Eddie Rabbitt, came down sick with the flu, and has performed there several times since.
He is considered one of the first mainstream Country artists to bring Country music back to its roots, and is one of the most popular recording artists of all time.
