John grew up in Texas, but often traveled with his family to California to pick fruit. After he graduated from high school, he attended college on a basketball scholarship.
John loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, and after some study of geology in Seattle, he headed for Alaska to search for gold. The gold he found was in his pen, because he started writing songs.
Over the early years he worked in a California mail room, and in a fishing tackle shop, but he was always strumming a tune.
We lost Johnny Horton less than two years after his big break through hit, “When its Springtime in Alaska (Its Forty Below).
Join me next Saturday, December 29 at 9:20, for more with Johnny Horton!
