He was a rodeo rider in his teens and early twenties, he had a bad fall and needed time to heal.  Ian decided to pick up a guitar and teach himself to play while he recovered.   He attended the Vancouver School of Art and graduated in 1958.

His guitar was never too far away, and he played some local pubs in the Vancouver area, and eventually moved to Toronto and started work as a commercial artist.  He met Sylvia Fricker in Toronto, and the pair played together, and later married.

Ian Tyson’s song, “Four Strong Winds” has been called the “Greatest Canadian Song of All Time”.
