His trademark dark glasses, dark clothes and a rather dark songwriting style placed Roy Orbison at the top of his game for decades and his live performances were distinctive as he stood nearly motionless as he sang.
Sun Records told Orbison he would never make it as a ballad singer.
They were wrong.
Orbison topped the charts many times, but his ballads remain most memorable. “Only the Lonely” from 1960 and “Crying” from 1961 still sound fresh now, as they did more than 50 years ago.
